I am pretty much ready to go NOW!! I've been on mat leave since mid-December and while I have enjoyed sleeping in and playing with Addison, it's becoming increasingly tougher to do ANYTHING! I feel bad because Addison wants to do all sorts of stuff and I tell her to wait until Daddy comes home from work. Am hoping to make up for things soon though. My parents are coming out mid-January and my brother and sister-in-law will be here mid-February, so I'm looking forward to both!

And I'm thinking I might have to come up with a new blog address, since it won't be just Princess Addie anymore! Will keep you all posted!!

Hope 2010 is going well for all of you - wow, can't believe it's 2010 already, that's just crazy!!!

My bad!!

Yes, I officially suck. I have not updated my blog in about 7 months. I'm not sure why, I think I just got tired of posting for a while and needed to take a break. I'll try to be back a little more regularly, but we'll see what happens...as you know the next few months might be kind of crazy and busy!

So, our past few months in a nutshell...Grandma and Grandpa S. came out in May and we had a great time visiting with them. This time no outlet shopping in the States, but we stayed local and went to the zoo, museum...you know, injecting a bit of culture into Addison!

In the summertime we took Addison on her first flight into the States - we went to San Francisco, Sonoma Valley, and Fresno to visit Great Grandma, plus a bunch of other relatives that Addison and Dan had not yet met. It was a HOT week, but fun and full of activities...train rides, visiting Golden Gate, Pier 39, swimming, and trying to stay cool! The week went by much too fast.

This fall has been busy prepping for winter, filling up our freezer and a couple of reno projects. Dan and his dad re-did our guest bedroom downstairs - previously used only for storage purposes! The past few months they (with help of some other friends) have been working on our rec room downstairs - receiving a much needed facelift. The plan is to convert it into a toyroom for our expanding family and collection of toys. We're nearing the end - hopefully by the end of this month everything will be completed, then Dan can get working on another time-sensitive project - storage in our baby room.... I'm assuming that everyone who actually reads this knows from FB that we are expecting a baby boy in January, but if you didn't know yet, well, SURPRISE!!

The big things are done in the room, though I'm constantly cleaning a trail of burp clothes and mountain of baby blankets courtesy of a "big sister" who likes to play in the baby's room more than anyone elses! Addie has nicknamed her brother "Little Daddy", which has been a name that somehow has grown on us. Poor kid will be nicknamed that all his life. We do (I think) have a real name picked out, with a fair bit of input from aforementioned big sister. You'll have to wait until January to find out though!

Addie's looking forward to being a big sister, though she initially had expressly ordered a baby sister. When we told her we were having a baby, she also claimed to have a baby in her tummy. When we told her that our baby was a boy, she insisted that hers was a girl, named Paddison. Still to this day, she will tell us all about her baby kicking, doing somersaults, and cooking in her tummy house. We do have a game plan so that she is not confused and in need of serious therapy come January when no baby sister appears out of her tummy. We've got a Cabbage Patch Kid (girl, of course) that she will get when mom and dad have to go have the real baby - I think that this will suffice for her.

Easter Anecdote

Sometime after Addison went to bed last night and this morning the "Easter bunny" paid us a visit. Not a ton of stuff, but enough for a 2-year old. Besides, the Easter bunny from Grandma and Grandpa W.'s house is coming over later today, if you know what I mean!!

The plan: Have the living room all set up with candy and treats and capture the whole moment on film when Addison wakes up. Yesterday we were talking to her about the Easter bunny and explaining what he/she does, and she kind of thought the bunny sounded a lot like Santa Claus. We told her that when the bunny came, they would leave treats in the house for her. I should preface this by saying that every single morning that Addison has ever woken up, she makes a beeline for mommy's bed, at which point we figured we'd head downstairs. This is mostly due to her fear of spiders and monsters in every single room that she is not currently in. We figured we were safe....

But this is a toddler....

We awoke this morning sometime before 7 to the sounds of crying - not a common sound for us to hear these days. Dan got up to get her out of bed only to discover that she was not in her room...or anywhere upstairs for that matter. Nooo, he found her walking up the stairs, with an already opened chocolate egg in one hand, chicky stuffy and bunny straw in the other...it was only a soggy diaper that kept her from investigating the living room further!

When asked why she came downstairs, she said, "I wanted to find the bunny treats!"

So while we didn't get the "moment" we were hoping for, watching her walk around the room with her basket in hand looking for the other treats were well worth it!
Happy Easter everyone!

Spring is *here* at last (?)

I use those words sparingly - just last week I put away the winter jackets and it turns out we needed them this weekend. But I'm optimistic spring will be here soon.
The past few weeks Addison and I have taken advantage of our time together and done quite a bit of baking. She loves to help out, adding ingredients and turning the mixer on and off. Her favorite (and our easiest) recipe is rice krispie squares. We've done lots of other stuff too, and this past Thursday we made sugar cookies with spring-y colored frosting. It was also one of those projects that had I done it by myself probably would have taken 2-3 hours total, but when you factor in toddler-time, it stretched out all day long (with breaks in between of course!). The cookies turned out great and we've had fun sharing them with her little friends, and Grandma and Grandpa W. as well. And of course, Addison and Daddy and I have had our fair share as well.

Tomorrow, my daughter learns how to make paska...pics to follow!

Oops!

So as you may (or may not!) notice, it's been a while since I last blogged. No excuse really suffices, there's been so many times that I've thought Hmmmm, I'll have to remember that for the blog, and then I just forget. I still blame it on baby brain, though now it might more aptly be called toddler brain!

It's been a busy month for us, shortly after Addison's birthday (see last post), we headed to BC for a week to celebrate Cam and Nicole's wedding. Now I have a new little sister to boss around. KIDDING Nicole, you know I love ya!! Addison and Jaclyn were both flower girls and did a great job and looked super cute. I don't know if Nicole knew this or now (and she may be finding out right now...), the whole time that I was walking down the aisle with Addison, she was having a grand old time, talking very loudly, saying, "JENNIFER! JENNIFER! JENNY-FER!" Since most of the people there had no idea who I was, they probably just thought Addie was a little nuts, but it was all I could do not to burst out laughing.

Here are some more pics of the wedding, if you are interested:

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=93227&l=59fc6&id=537357164

Our trip back to Toronto was a little eventful. Vancouver had crazy insane amounts of snow all week that we were there, and a snow storm on the day we left. We sat on the tarmac for a few hours before we actually left. Addie was remarkably well-behaved considering her airplane time doubled. And I took a few Gravol on the plane, so I was doin' fiiiiiinnnnnneee! (hate to fly, do what I have to do!)

Christmas morning we spent as a family in our own house - that's the first time ever since we've been married that we've had Christmas in our own place. Usually we are at one of our family's houses - which is great too, but this felt kind of special! I had Christmas week off of work, which felt great, especially since I had just come off of my BC holidays (needed a holiday to recoup from my holiday!). Then it was back to work... it's been fun, all the students have come back and we're into the swing of things!

Below is a pic of the birthday kids, Addison was Dec 9, Colin was Dec 25 and Jackie was Jan 6, so we celebrated them all together, and lovely Uncle Colin taught the girls how to run their fingers over open flames. Thanks, Colin!

Happy Birthday Addison!

Well, today's the day my baby turns 2. Usually we wait until a little bit later, but just seeing the excitement everytime we went to the store and Addison saw a Santa or snowman or a Chrithmith tree...we caved and put it up early. She woke up from her nap when we were about halfway through and as she came down the stairs she was asking,
"what's that?"
(garland)

"what's thaaaat?"
(Stockings)

"what's Thaaaat?"
(Christms Village)

"KRITHMITH TREEEEE!!!!"
Yeah, she knew that one pretty well! She helped us finish decorating the tree and was pulling out decorations from a box, telling us what they were as she handed them over:

"House"
"Stocking"
"Bell"
"Star"
"Goat"

wait a second..goat? Dan and I turn and look at her, and she's holding Rudolph who, to an unknowing toddler, slightly does resemble a goat!

She also helped add to our Christmas Village set this year...we had a Library, a Church and a FireHall...now our village is populated by Little People, complete with furnishings - outside the library, you can see a lovely pastel pink potty, there's a purple car riding through the village, and a lovely dining room set.

Addison's been a funny one this fall. She loves to play "Where's Addison." This doesn't mean that she hides and we find her. On the contrary, she thinks she has discovered how to make herself INVISIBLE. Oh yes, she closes her eyes and says, "Where's Addison?" Then she opens her eye ever so slowly and giggles when we say, "THERE SHE IS!" And we play this game over and over and over and over.....

October

Halloween came and went and it was so exciting this year. Last year it was fun to take her out, even though she was really too young to get anything out of it. This year however, she had a ton of fun! She loved going house to house, especially if a house had a pumpkin; she really didn't care too much about the whole candy thing!

"Mummy! Big Pumpkin! Sad Pumpkin!"

next house:

"NO pumpkin...mummy, wheresthepumpkin?? "

In the almost-week since halloween, about 20 times a day, completely out of the blue Addison will say, "Skelton on DOOR!" or "Bones on FLOOR!" Ahhh, the things that she remembers!

Her favorite word this fall is "Where"...wheresthedoor, wheresdaddy, wherestheball and especially "Wheresthemoon?" - she's all about the moon, asking where it is during the day and evening, whether it is out or not. She LOVES the moon! Her sentences are getting longer and longer - most often she repeats what we've read in a book, so the past couple weeks she'll toddle around saying, "Moonfalldownonenight - catchit!!" (From "When Moon Fell Down".

She can now "sing" all the words to Twinkle twinkle and Jesus Loves me. She can also do most of the ABC song, but she makes up a few of the letters in between. She also loves the "Rosie" song (as she calls it) but doesn't sing it...just loves to "all fall down!"

She's taken a real shine to YouTube as well! We found some Wiggles videos on there and she just loves them (Jeff is her favorite!)...and on youtube there's links to other related videos and somehow we found some Mickey Mouse Clubhouse clips. Now Addison is completely obsessed with the Clubhouse - between the Hot Dog song and anything Goofy, it is all we hear about these days!

Fall

Autumn has finally arrived. We've been blessed this fall, it's been beautiful weather. We even had Thanksgiving dinner while wearing tank tops and shorts - seriously!! But I think that is gone now. One of our trees is completely bare and the oaks are just starting to shed their leaves. That's one thing we hadn't really thought about when we were looking for a house last year. We wanted mature trees...without taking into account that we would have to RAKE the yard too!!

My baby just keeps getting bigger...we're trying the big girl bed again. We had limited success in the summertime, but right in the middle of that, we took our trip to the cottage, which was great and fun and wonderful, but played havoc with Addie's sleeping habits and resulted in a month or so of refusing her bed, choosing to stay with mommy and daddy. We got big girl blankets and everything on it now, so we'll give this another try!

And where would we be without projects? Dan and his dad tore apart our purple bathroom on the weekend...and let's just say that it's not quite habitable yet. They've gutted, mudded, sanded, scraped and painted. All that is left is to put in the flooring, the vanity and the toilet. Then all will be functioning again. I'll post a pic of the (mostly) gutted room, but no finished project yet!

*sniff, sniff*...another milestone...

We've had so many little milestones the past few weeks, just another reminder that my baby is now a little girl. She gave up her final bottle about 1-2 weeks ago. Drippy cups and rubbermaid bottles and the occasional big person cup are all we do now. And she's started to tell us that she's pooping (albeit after the fact, but she makes sure she gets a diaper change right away, as she is quite uncomfortable with a big lump in her diaper. Understandably so!). Most of her little milestones make me happy and a little sad, but today....

Today was Addie's first day in day-care. Her grandparents still take her 3 days a week, but with me working a bit more than before, it just made so much sense to have someone else take her one partial day a week. There is a lady from our church that does daycare in her home and today was Addie's first day. Addie was a wee bit hesitant - until she saw KIDS and then she was totally fine, not a care in the world, just follow the KIDS!! Me on the other hand, I left with a big lump in my throat. I was happy that she gets the opportunity to spend the time with other kids and I knew that she would be fine, but it was still a bit to take in for me.

When I picked her up, Addison was still playing around with KIDS (she loves playing with other children, which was another reason I am happy this is working out!) and was sooooo tired - too much excitement going on with other kids around, no way was she going to take a nap!! We got home about 20 minutes ago and she's been sleeping for about 18 - boy did she crash!! I also have to pack bigger lunches for her - apparently in other people's house she doesn't eat like a bird, she actually has an appetite! So for Day #1, it was a success and I am so glad that it was. Addison likes the caregiver and the kids and she is being well taken care of...still have a little lump in my throat though!

Fall update

Addison hamming it up on Goat Island
Grandma, Grandpa and Addison enjoying a candid

moment on Goat Island

Mommy and Addison at the top of the Falls on the last of the 3 Sisters islands...next stop - THE FALLS! Addison loved this and talked about it for days!
Wow, it's been a bit since I last posted! My parents were out visiting the past couple of weeks and I'm adding pictures to the album on your right as we speak. Addison loved spending time with her grandparents (and they loved spending time with her!). Read lots of books, ate lots (AND LOTS) of Smarties conveniently hiding under Grandma's pillow, and many trips to McD's for ice cream and fries. We also went to Niagara Falls, USA once again (we went last year as well, this year the deals at the outlet stores weren't as good). And once again, Addison was fast asleep while we were actually at the Falls - like last year, we happened to wear her out at the falls and she missed it all. Though she was awake for the "3 Sisters Islands" part of the falls. That is the 3 little islands just off the main island on the US side at the top of the lake just before the falls. It is quite spectacular to see. And Addison really wanted to go into the water and was quite upset at my vice-like grip! Over the past couple weeks, she has begun to use small 3-4 word sentences. Her favorite seems to be: "Chocolate. I likeit!" or "Cheese. I likeit!" Or at the airport after dropping off Grandma and Grandpa: "Airplane, Addison, ONIT! Want ONIT!"

Work is going well for me. I started as Library Director at EBC 3-4 weeks ago and it is definitely a learning process. I will spare you the technical mumbo-jumbo but there is a lot to learn and a lot that is different from a public library. I'm enjoying it; though there is a ton of work to be done, the pace is very laid-back. And I get to go to meetings...lots and lots of meetings. Staff meetings, faculty meetings, and soon - library committee meetings!

Toddler Fashionista and Summer Wrap-up

Addison is developing her own sense of...how do you say...style (?). Each morning, she helps pick out her clothes and for the most part it's pretty easy. When it's up to her, she will always pick the "pink" shorts and the "pink" shirt. No problems, right? A few days ago we went to Children's Place and there were some decent sales on, so I picked her up a couple fall outfits. A flowery dress, a stripy sweater, and a pair of pink leggings. When we got home, Addison insisted on wearing all together. Yes, she actually did! Her exact words were: "Clothes...WANT IT!" ah yes, a diva in the making. The result, ladies and gentlemen.....
And yes, she loved it! Kept saying "Glamriss!"

This summer, we have enjoyed being a family in our new house. We've discovered our community by biking all over the place. The bike seat took some getting used to for Addison, but now she loves it. Same goes for the helmet! We have played with dollhouses and furniture to the point that it's driving me crazy, but Addison loves finding new places to put her furniture (sometimes her "room" is on top of the trunk, other times, it's on the landing...still other times in the kitchen RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE FRIDGE!!)

Now that fall is here, we've got a few plans up our sleeve. First on the list is the upstairs bathroom. Below is a picture when we first moved in, as well as 2 "current" pictures:

So far, the only change we've made is changing the tub and taking out the sliding glass door. And yes, removing thousands of purple tiles. Sitting in our garage is our new vanity, which looks like the one below (which I got from the company's web site...THIS IS NOT ACTUALLY OUR BATHROOM!).
We are in the middle of picking out flooring, plus lighting, faucet, towel racks, mirrors, etc. Dan will enjoy doing some demolition of the closet in the bathroom and I will be sure to post more pics as we go along!

Next up is a visit from my parents, who are coming out from BC next week to spend a couple weeks with Addison...and us of course! We are looking forward to good times with them - lots of plans so far, including a trip to the outlet malls in New York...I mean the beautiful scenery of Niagara Falls, US!! Will keep you posted!

Addie-speak...

Addison's got a huge, fairly articulate vocabulary, but there are a few words that we totally understand (hey, that's a parent's job, eh?), but may seem entirely unintelligible to anyone else. Go ahead, take the Addie test and find out if you can Addi-speak! Post your answers and we'll see! Good luck to you all :-)

1. Libree
2. Sladid
3. Ovelive
4. deritis!
5. pilglet
6. peetha

On another note, we have added to our family! We bought 2 goldfish over the weekend (gotta start small!) and Addison loves pressing her face up against the tank, "kissing" the fish, and holding her toy teaups against the glass, to "feed" the fishies coffee. Quite cute. As for names, we decided we were going to let Addison do this one. We figured that 1 of them would be named Dorothy (from Elmo's World"), but she ran right up to the fish tank with a big smile on her face screeching, "DOROTHYSSSS!". So both of our fish are named Dorothy :-)

Big News!!

No, I'm not pregnant!! Bet some of you were thinking that!! No, my news is more career-related. Just a couple of days ago, I gave my notice to the Cambridge Library, where I've been a reference librarian for almost a year. It was actually a tough decision, as I love being a public librarian (I LOVED being a childrens librarian, and really enjoyed being part of reference services). My problem really had nothing to do with the actual job, which was great. The problem has been that my position requires that I work every single Saturday and Sunday, plus at least 1 evening a week. Financially, the hours were okay, not wonderful, but adequate. Often I was able to pick up extra shifts which was great, but usually they were evening shifts. It was at the point that Dan would be working the entire day, I would drop Addie off at his work, then head off to work myself. So as a family we were going days without being all together. Which sucked!!

Soooo, I am embarking on a career as a Library Director at one of the local Christian colleges out here. My first day will be Sept. 2. It will be a complete change for me, as I will be the only "librarian"on staff, working with a library assistant and circulation staff and students. The job itself sounds like a challenge and will certainly keep me busy (collection development, library policy, staffing, reports, meetings...and so on! No more pointing out the direction of the latest Janet Evanovich and James Patterson books!). But I am looking forward to it. It is close to home, I don't work evenings or weekends, and it's still p/t (but with more hours than I was getting at the public library). I'm kind of nervous, but excited too.

Now to just forget all I know about Dewey Decimal and immerse myself in the fascinating world of Library of Congress - drat!!!!!

"Mormoner"

Addison LOVES books and we are just starting to get away from the board books and into the regular picture books...that is, until pages become all ripped up once again. Anyways, one of her favorite books right now is the Robert Munsch book, Mortimer. As a (*former, and *future) children's librarian, this was one of my favorite books to read at storytime for all the kiddies, so I am quite excited when she comes running up with the book and says, "Mormoner...Read...Story!" Isn't it cute when the words don't entirely come out right yet?! If you've never read it and you have little kids, look for it at your local library - or better yet, add it to your collection at home!

More from the mouths of babes...

Mommy: Addie, what do you do to bugs??

Addison: SQ-WISH!!

My daughter, slayer of bugs. The other day there was a very slow fly hovering around. Dan made a couple half-hearted attempts, and didn't get it. Dan and I began talking and a few seconds later, we looked at Addie and she had a partial (ECK!)fly in her hand. The rest was smeared across the window sill. It's the Wohlgemut Cottage week! Every couple years, Dan's whole family gets together and goes to the cottage on the shores of Lake Kashwakamak, about an hour north of Kingston. With Addison and her 6 cousins ranging in age from 5-16, there was no shortage of entertainment! Addison loved all the attention she got! So much that she decided that for the most part, nap time and bedtime were more of a "suggestion" than a necessity. Who needs to sleep when your cousins are playing in the next room?

Many of us tried our hand at fishing; our nephew Tobin was the only successful one. The only thing I caught when I went out was a bunch of mosquito bites. UGH. Addison went out on a row boat (halfway out she decided she wanted "out" - NOW!!! Dan took her out on the kayak and had much better luck.

We enjoyed Smores by the fireside; Aunt Denise brought some M&Ms and quickly became Addie's new best friend! She would give Addison a couple chocolates and Addison would eat one and bring the other one to her cousins, or aunts and uncles. She figured out pretty quickly though that she could fit 2 in her mouth and that was the end of sharing!

It was tough when everyone started to leave...by Sunday, Addison was the only cousin left and walked around the cottage saying, "Rachel? Lauren? Toby?" and was quite disappointed when she couldn't find all of her buddies!

For more on our wildly exciting week visit my sister-in-law's page, she's got some great pics of our wonderful week! Our first was on Canada Day; Addison was a little apprehensive at first, but before you know it, she was running around, playing with all of the water-related gadgets and sprayers!! This morning we went to another water park; this one was more low-keyed (ie-not as swarmed with kids!!) and she had lots of fun until some little kid ran into her while running around the pad. She didn't have much fun after that...I'm sure she'll have forgotten about it by the next time we go.

A little bit more work has been done on the house. Almost all of those thousands of little purple tiles in the bathroom are gone (Dan said the sooner I got rid of them, the sooner he could sand and give me a new bathroom! If that's not incentive, I don't know what is! Let me assure you with all the scraped knuckles I have chiseling away, there is blood AND sweat equity in this house!). We spent part of Canada Day sealing/staining our deck. I think it might need one more coat, but we love it so far!

Happy Canada Day!

Hi everyone;
I hope all of you, my fellow Canadians, enjoy our Canada Day holiday today. Now to preface, she's been pretty good - a little too good - at recognizing all of her Treehouse buddies when we're at the store, even the ones she doesn't watch on tv - Elmo, Bert, Ernie, Barney, Mecca Pecca, Dora, Diego, Thomas...and the list goes on. However she's never been one to ask for a toy when we're in the store (so far) or throw a tantrum if we put a toy back on the shelf (so far). But today, it became official - the consumer machine has a firm grasp on this child.

We were at home and I asked Addison what she wanted for lunch. Usually we have sandwiches, fruit, pickles, yogurt...normal stuff. Sometimes she'll ask for cheese, sometimes for peaches. But today? "Addie, what do you want for lunch?"

" 'DONALDS!! 'DONALDS!!"

Oh yes, the Force of the Golden Arch is strong in this one. And I'm trying to figure out how she knows McD's...cuz we have been there only 2-3 times in her whole life!!!

Excited about poop!

Last night Addison had her very first poop in the big girl potty!! It was quite the momentous occasion over here - she had the "look" down in the living room so I asked her if she wanted to sit on the potty and she nodded, mid-strain. We made it upstairs just in time and she was excited after the fact to see the fruits of her labours, finished with a farewell ceremony down the big porcelain pot! And she just did it again this morning - we phoned Daddy at work to let him know and he was excited too, but really couldn't say too much - (I guess being a bank manager, people would look at him kind of funny if he was talking about poop on the phone...or something like that!!)
So that's our big event for the day...can't get too much more exciting than that - or can it???

Tornado watch (updated)!!

My sister just called from Winnipeg to let me know that Kitchener is under a Tornado Watch - as I sit typing away up on the second floor I keep thinking of what I would need to bring to the basement if so needed;
-makeup box
-photo album
-quickly finish this post...
-run to main floor and get Addie
-purse
-basement!
-camera - hey if there's a chance we might get a tornado wouldn't it be super cool to get a picture??

(updated Monday morning - No tornado here, though we did have a nasty thunderstorm. We enjoyed some visitors the other week -my sister Michele, her husband Scott and our niece Jackie. It's been 5 months since we last saw them and it was so neat to see the interaction between the girls! They are kind of playing together - still mostly doing their own thing, but side by side. We enjoyed a day at the park, played with the animals at Waterloo Park, visted St. Jacobs and saw some Old Order Mennonites in their buggies - cool!! We also enjoyed the MCC sale and all of the wonderful foods that come with that! Plus we went to our local pool a couple of times - the girls just loved going on the "little slide" though kept pointing to the bigger slide which looked much more fun!
We really enjoy spending these times with family, as so much of both our families live far away from us, and we don't get to see them as often as we like - so we really cherish the times we spend together!
Anyways, lots more pics of our time together, go to our pictures (up on the top right) and go to the "Mikki and Scott" album! Enjoy :-)
